Yes I'm alive

Mon Jul 13, 2009, 9:37 PM
Aren't you so glad?

I'm currently teaching a Cartooning class for middle school students. It's pretty fun, I'm getting to express my inner Leach and draw on white boards and have sketch-a-longs =P

I've also done a few drawings using a huge sheet of paper and a sharpie. It's really really weird doing it that way because everything is permanent. If I throw down a line I don't like, oh well, it's there and there's no erasing it so I've got to make everything right or just live with it.

More drawings to come...maybe...

Ladies and Gentlemen, boys and girls of all ages! Welcome to my demented neck of the woods! My name is Joe and I will be your survival guide for today! To explain a little about myself, I am a cartoon artist. At least, that's what I call myself at night to make me sleep better. I make my money in Graphic Design while I wait very patiently for my chance at cartoon glory. I do a varying array of styles from DC to Marvel; Horror to Goofy; and everything in between. I'm colorblind so you won't see many colors around here unless I get an inkling to guess what color pencil is what. And thanks to encouragement from friends, I now draw the entire gambit of mediums, from horrifically ugly to strikingly beautiful. All will be done in the name of art!

Sit back, relax, grab some popcorn, and enjoy the tour! Oh and please...beware of the troll...he seems to have gotten loose...again...

hey joe...so i was wondering...do you have any tips on how to learn to emulate a famous artist...like where do you start, what do you do, etc...?
:iconjoepratt:
huh...that's a tough question...

The way I've always approached it was I would find a piece I really liked and replicated it. Me, I never trace but that is a personal choice. I would say if it gives you an edge, trace a drawing a few times then try a free hand reproduction. From there you should have a decent feel for the style and where things need to go to make it look like that style.

It is really hard to explain it in words beyond "I just look at it and copy it." I can only really say try what I said and if it sticks, it sticks. Just draw in their style as many times as you can and find as many different drawings and poses to replicate. So then you can really get their thought process down on what they do in different poses and situations.

hopefully that helps

hmmm ill have to give that a try...i only trace things that i draw lol =P but i can do pretty good at replicating an "already drawn picture" so...but its just the face and either the chest or the hands (depending on the pose) that i have trouble with...i still havent found a good starting shape for a womans head =[
:iconjoepratt:
ya, breasts are not easy to draw because they just hang off the body. It's hard to get the right size and to make it look like it's connected to the body and that they have weight. I still have lots of trouble getting it right.

woman's facial features are hard as well so don't feel bad =P I don't really have a good starting reference for girl's heads yet either
:iconodadodamagoda:
i know right...now its just one more area where women have managed to sneak their complicated ways in to lmao...what is hard for me is i always make the jaw line and cheek bones too manly...my women turn our really strong faced...but on the plus side, by looking at some professionals work i have kinda learned to do lips and noses but eyes are still a little bit of a speed bump for me lol one is always bigger than the other or they are on crooked lmao
